John Briney originally started working at the Berrien County Sheriff’s department in 1981 working inside the jail, then 6 years later he transferred to the road patrol and worked his way through the ranks; thus, retiring as a Lieutenant Detective. Mr. Briney ran several divisions within the department to include: road patrol, narcotics, detective bureau, and Commander of the Bomb Squad for 23 years; in addition to serving 13 years on the SWAT team as an explosive breacher and entry man.
Throughout his career Lieutenant Briney was awarded over 25 citations/awards from local, county, state and many federal law enforcement agencies to include: The Medal of Valor, Distinguished Service award, Deputy of the Year, Michigan’s Peace Officer of the Year, and awards from the Director of the Michigan State Police Dept., The U.S. Attorney General, FBI Director, DEA, The U.S. Attorney’s Office, and the Department of Justice. He then retired from the Berrien County Sheriff's Department in Michigan in 2007 after 26 ½ years of dedicated and decorated service to his community.
Mr. Briney successfully graduated from the FBI National Academy in 1998 Session #192, and has taught for 25 years as an adjunct instructor in Law Enforcement.
After Lieutenant Briney moved to St. Lucie County, Florida, he then decided to wear another uniform one more time to serve his community. Mr. Briney gave an additional 12 years of dedicated service to the Port St Lucie Police department, from 2007 to 2019 as an Evidence Manager and Reserve Police Officer until his second retirement in 2019.
All Florida Security Services is honored to have Lieutenant Briney as one of our security instructors and firearms instructors. The students of his security and firearms courses are fortunate to glean from life's achievements and experiences and are learning not only from a classroom but also from real book of life as well. Our students and employees enjoy his approachable and relaxed manner of teaching very pertinent lifesaving and career formulating information for the new officers and former professionals alike.
